Mr. Owl was interviewing volunteers to explore the dark forest. They could not risk sending more than one explorer, and the brave animal that went might not return.

Mr. Beaver was first, and when asked what he would like to receive in exchange for exploring the dark forest, he said, “One pound of nuts. I have children to feed.”

Mr. Rabbit was next, and when asked what he wanted, he said “Two pounds of nuts. I have many little bunnies that need feeding while I’m away.”

Mr. Fox was last, and when asked what he wanted, he said, “Three pounds of nuts.”

“Why so much more than Mr. Beaver and Mr. Rabbit?” asked Mr. Owl.

Mr. Fox slyly replied, “If you give me three pounds, I’ll give you one pound, I’ll keep one pound, and we can send the beaver.”
