Teacher was having trouble getting through to her student, but the reason for it is just great

A teacher decided to get a little creative with her young students with a math problem.
“If I give you two rabbits and two rabbits and another two rabbits,” the teacher started, “how many rabbits have you got?”
“Seven!” Matty replied.
“No, listen carefully again. If I give you two rabbits and two rabbits and another two rabbits, how many rabbits have you got?”

“Seven!” Matty repeated.
“Let’s try this another way,” the teacher said, a little annoyed. “If I give you two apples and two apples and another two apples, how many apples have you got?”
“Six,” Matty said.
“Good. Now if I give you two rabbits and two rabbits and another two rabbits, how many rabbits have you got?”
“Seven!”
“How on earth do you work out that three lots of two rabbits is seven?” the teacher asked, incredulous.

Matty replied, “I’ve already got one rabbit at home now!”
